Tetraphobia is a fear of the number 4, which in eastern Asia is associated with death. That is why HMD Global is not going to make up the shortcomings in the numbering and will not prepare the Nokia 4 model. Similarly, in the case of OnePlus, after the 3T model, instead of OnePlus 4, the OnePlus 5 came out. Is this excessive caution? China is an important market for a new Finnish manufacturer, so it is better not to tempt fate.

All previously released smartphones by HMD Global, namely Nokia 3, 5 and 6, were received very well in China. New Nokia smartphones with Android operating system on board have spread out like fresh buns yet at the pre-sale stage. Interest exceeded even the most daring expectations of the manufacturer, which delayed the launch of these devices in some countries. However, with tetraphobia there are no jokes. Number 4 in many dialects of Chinese sounds similar to the word death. This is why this number is omitted for house numbering, floors, etc. It is normal in China that 4, 14 and 24 numbers are replaced by 3A, 13A, and 23A.

New Nokia phones will appear on the market but Nokia 4 will not be released.

Pekka Rantala, head of marketing at HMD Global, said in an interview that his company is now focusing on smartphones. They have so work at this moment, that HMD Global even does not think about tablets or different types of accessories. He was also asked about the long awaited flagship, i.e. Nokia 9. He did not give a clear answer but confirmed the schema of the numbering. So we can expect models Nokia 2, 7, 8 and 9. At the same time, the name of Nokia 2 was given directly, the rest are guesses. Interestingly, the number 4 is not an obstacle for some manufacturers. For example, Xiaomi showed no resemblance to the Mi4, Redmi 4, or Redmi Note 4 models. Also, Apple and Samsung did not make any special numbers for China. Does OnePlus and Nokia (and more specifically HMD Global) exaggerate with their tetraphobia?
