Does anyone use smartphones with Windows Phone 10 on board? Statistics clearly show that Windows is one of the least popular operating systems for mobile devices. It is currently used by only 1.13% of smartphone users. However, the Hamburg police found perfect application for Lumia mobiles with this operating system. It turns out that the police have a very interesting idea how to use the presence of Windows 10 on many platforms.
We all know that Lumia smartphones with Windows Phone on board are a relic of the past. The last such phone appeared on the market a year and a half ago. Currently most of the Windows mobiles are manufactured by HP, not Microsoft. However, this does not bother the German police in Hamburg, to take advantage of the UWP (Universal Windows Platform). It allows you to develop universal applications that will work on both Windows 10 and Windows 10 Mobile devices. Thanks to this, police officers will spend less time on paperwork and more on the field.
The Hamburg police ordered 900 Lumia smartphones
The whole investment costs 100 000 Euros, so it comes out about 110 Euros for a single device. I have to admit that it is a fairly economical solution that can bring very measurable benefits. This will allow police officers to report directly to the incident site rather than making paper notes that need to be rewritten to a computer at the police station. Of course, they will have to take care of the security of data, but in the age of Virtual Private Network (VPN) solutions, this is not the problem.
The niche operating system is a plus for the police
Windows 10 Mobile is a practically useless system for most smartphone users. People complain about a small amount of applications and worse support for programs that are already there. Even Facebook does not care too much about its application on the Microsoft platform. They have simply ported the version written for iOS. But for the police this is an advantage, because it gives the assurance that purchased Lumia mobiles will only be used for business purposes. I just hope that in a few years Microsoft will not be completely out of the mobile market and the Hamburg Police solution will not be useless. Perhaps soon HP will produce several budget smartphone models with Windows 10. In this case, Microsoft would have to develop only software.
