The Sony Xperia XZ Premium was first officially unveiled smartphone with a category 16 LTE modem that offers the magic 1 Gbps download speed. Of course, this is all thanks to the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset and 4×4 MIMO antennas. However, in practice no operator has 20 MHz blocks in every band. Therefore, this speed is not possible even under the most favourable conditions. On the other hand, 750 Mbps is a completely different story.
T-Mobile USA was boasting of the possibility of achieving 1Gbps last year, but this result was achieved in a laboratory using a device unknown at that time. Later, the same experiment was repeated with the Samsung Galaxy S8. However, as we all know, the results obtained in laboratory latrines are much different from what is happening in the field. It is no longer just that the operator does not have the required band yet or that the signal is too weak. MIMO 4×4 technology improves coverage and increases transmission speed, but in practice it is difficult to get maximum result.
Everything Everywhere has achieved 750 Mbps under real conditions.
Everything Everywhere has so many frequency resources that it is theoretically able to get up to 950 Mbps speed in their LTE-Advanced network. In one variant, a total aggregation of 55 MHz is possible, but during the demonstration failed to achieve full speed in each band. However, the peak download speed of 825 Mbps was achieved. On the other hand, the stable throughput was about 750 Mbps, so this value was reported in the official release.
Many people complain that hundreds of Mbps on the phone are not needed by anyone. However, we forget how we began to consume data. With instant messaging, we send graphics or short videos instead of text messages. In the social media, videos begin to dump normal pictures. Therefore, during the demonstration with Sony Xperia XZ Premium several activities were carried out at once:
- 4K HDR video streaming,
- synchronisation of Google Drive data,
- downloading of high quality music for later offline usage.
This kind of scenario is not anything special for modern flagship smartphone.
